The following post was written by my daughter, Alix Vinton. She is applying for scholarships so she can attend University of Mary-Hardin Baylor this fall. Please enjoy the short essay she wrote in response to school censorship.

Response to Campus Censorship

In some ways I disagree with Greg Lukianoff on the topic of campus censorship. He said that schools are in many was violating the first amendment with rules and regulations that the students are forced to follow to be able to attend that particular college. Yes that might be true, but society should think about how the universities might view the right of free speech on campus. Universities see the right for free speech as a threat to the school and to the students. When students are voicing their opinions disagreeing students will start fights and other dangerous ways to stop the other students from voicing their own opinion. In some high schools students are using their free speech rights to go around with sign, on campus to say things like, “Smoke for Jesus.” This sign is referring to illegal marijuana use and it is trying to make it sound religious to influence the religious believers on campus. This caused the high school many troubles because parents and students were calling arguing that the students had a right to say what they want and other parents and students arguing about the religious ties to the signs. Schools are trying to prevent students from acting out and not have to deal with parents and other students who agree or disagree with the signs or speeches or the decisions of the school has made. In America we, Americans are lucky to even be able to complain about free speech. We I lived in other countries we were not allowed to say in what we believed or to hint at it in the slightest way. It was very different from complaining about schools suspending students for using their free speech rights to legally not be able to say anything. Americans take advantage of this right of free speech. That is what it is, a right that many American have violated causing rules and regulation on free speech. Campuses are just trying to keep the peace on the campus.

*Sigh* I feel so far from all of you because I don't have regular Internet access. It was so good to read a little about what everyone is doing today. Everything here is great. We are all moved in to our new home. Aside from one room of boxes, the rest of the house looks pretty good. I would post a ton of pictures of the cat and house and everything, but we cannot manage to find the camera cord. I think it's going to be easier to go buy a new one than to search all those boxes.
